On-Board AssetTraks™ came through when LoJack couldn't!

A Nevada Landscaping and Maintenance contractor had luck on their side on Wednesday, December 13. In early December, the company began installing On-Board Communications’ AssetTraks™ units on their equipment to remotely monitor engine hours. Eight days after installing a unit on a Caterpillar 416C Backhoe, the backhoe disappeared from a job site. Although the backhoe was also equipped with LoJack, the police were unable to locate it. On-Board was then notified and asked if they could locate the backhoe. Within minutes, the On-Board Help Desk was able to provide both the location and specific GPS coordinates where the backhoe was located. On-Board immediately placed the AssetTraks™ unit in stolen mode, which sends an email to designated individuals if the unit moves. At 2:43 P.M., an email was received indicating that the backhoe was moving. On-Board immediately called the contractor, and learned that the contractor was hauling the backhoe back to their job site, a success of the system.

Thursday, November 2, was an exciting day for the founders and owners of this Electrical contractor located in Fort Worth, Texas. When workers arrived at the company’s secure facility, they found the gate open and the security system compromised. Employees noticed tools, several rolls of wire and a Ford van missing from the lot.

Fortunately, they had AssetTraks™, GPS tracking devices by On-Board Communications, installed in their vehicles. The contractor logged onto the company’s AssetTraks™ web page and was directed to the location where the vehicle had stopped at 5:21 AM. They drove to the address which was a local motel. The missing van was sitting in the parking lot. The company contacted the police who dispatched a special theft task force. The contractor and the task force waited until the alleged thieves exited the motel room.

One person was apprehended immediately, the other tried to run. Both men were captured and now face felony vehicle theft charges.

The depreciated value of the recovered truck and equipment were valued in excess of $20,000. Using the system, detectives noticed the stolen van had made one additional stop before arriving at the hotel. They went to that location and found another stolen vehicle, along with several stolen tools. One AssetTraks™ unit, two vehicles recovered….. Not bad for ˝ day’s work!
